Short Biography of Toshi Yoshida

Toshi Yoshida was born on July 25, 1911, in Tokyo as the eldest son of Hiroshi Yoshida, one of the leading shin hanga masters, and his wife Fujio, an artist herself. Raised in a family of painters and printmakers, Toshi was surrounded by art from childhood. He is said to have begun drawing at the age of three, impressing even his father with his early talent.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Toshi studied both woodblock printmaking and painting. He joined the Yoshida family workshop, learning every stage of the woodblock process. From the beginning, he combined technical mastery with a broad curiosity about the world.

Like his father, Toshi traveled extensively. He visited the United States, Canada, Europe, India, Africa, Australia, and even Antarctica. His travels inspired a wide range of prints depicting realistic landscapes, wildlife, and cultural scenes. After Hiroshi’s death in 1950, Toshi briefly experimented with abstract and non-objective art, before returning to realistic landscapes and nature subjects—genres that defined much of his career.

Toshi Yoshida passed away in 1995. Today his woodblock prints remain highly regarded by collectors worldwide for their refined technique, artistic quality, and wide-ranging subject matter.
